About MaaS and how we work together
What does MaaS mean, and how does it work?
MaaS (MATHISON-as-a-Service) is a modern approach to in-house legal support, designed for technology and innovative companies. Our aim is to let you focus on your business while we take care of your legal needs over the long term.
MaaS gives you access to legal, tax and investment services and the full MATHISON support network: a 12-member team, partners and investors in more than 40 countries, training and networking events, a digital legal library, our Lawyer on Call service and other benefits.
The programme operates on a monthly subscription that is as easy to budget for as an employee's salary. MaaS provides reliable support from a team of lawyers and advisers who work as your in-house colleagues, with the flexibility of an external partner.
What is the customer success model?
Our customer success model focuses on helping you achieve specific results as well as delivering the service. We measure our contribution against your business goals, going beyond the traditional focus on billable hours.
In practice, we agree on priorities and objectives together at the start of each period. We use these to shape the legal project and individual tasks so that our work supports your company's growth.
What are the advantages of MaaS compared with one-off project support?
Project-based support addresses a specific task or issue without linking it to the company's wider goals. MaaS is designed for long-term growth, providing a stable team that knows your company and proactively addresses legal matters before they become problems.
This allows you to focus fully on your business, with the legal details taken care of.
Can I use MaaS on a short-term basis?
MaaS is designed to provide long-term legal support for your growth. If you only need one-off assistance, we can work with you on a project basis, with a clearly defined scope and fixed fee.
How can I work with you outside the MaaS programme?
We also offer Strategic Projects, which are project packages with a defined scope and fixed fee, as well as Strategic Legal Consultations.
What is a Strategic Legal Consultation, and how does it work?
This focused consultation addresses a specific business challenge, such as reviewing your licences, entering a new market, negotiating with an investor or assessing an AI compliance issue. We provide a legal and strategic perspective, identify risks and recommend the most effective solution. The consultation lasts 60 minutes and results in a concise action plan.
What do Strategic Projects cover?
Strategic Projects provide legal support for key business milestones, such as securing investment, bringing an investor on board, creating a holding structure, expanding into another country or selling a business. We manage the entire process, from designing the solution through negotiations to implementation. We generally work for a fixed fee. Our aim is to ensure the legal project supports your growth and minimises risk.
Packages and flexibility
How do I know which package is right for my company?
You do not have to choose alone. At our initial meeting, we review your needs and recommend a suitable package or develop a tailored solution. Each package clearly defines the included capacity, response times and benefits.
Do you offer a trial period for MaaS?
We do not offer a trial period, but you can experience working with us through an initial project with a clearly defined scope and fixed fee.
Can I switch packages during the engagement?
Yes, you can request a package change at any time. Depending on its scope, the change takes effect in the following month or the month after that.
Can I adjust my package for seasonal needs or expected workloads?
Yes. We adapt capacity to your needs, usually on a quarterly basis. We increase it for demanding projects and reduce it during quieter periods. We coordinate all changes together during regular status meetings so that you remain in full control of capacity.
Can I carry unused hours over to the next month?
Unused capacity cannot be carried over because we normally plan projects in advance. This ensures that tasks progress according to the agreed schedule.
How do you charge for services beyond the subscription?
We normally plan projects in advance, so packages are rarely exceeded. If you need services beyond your reserved capacity, we charge a preferential hourly rate of EUR 110. The hourly rate for services outside MaaS is EUR 140.
Getting started: onboarding and audit
How does onboarding work?
Onboarding is a practical process designed to get support for your legal projects in place quickly. We first get to know your company, services or products, team, goals and legal needs.
We then audit the company's legal position, identify legal obstacles to progress and agree on the objectives of our engagement and how we will measure success. You also meet your Customer Success Manager, who will be your main point of contact.
Finally, we schedule regular status updates and give you access to a digital workspace for managing legal projects.
How much time should I set aside for onboarding?
The onboarding meeting takes approximately two hours. We also recommend allowing time to gather the necessary documents within your company. This usually takes just a few hours and helps us get off to an efficient start.
How does the legal audit work, and how much time will it take?
The legal audit is the starting point for our work together. It provides a concrete, prioritised plan, as well as an overview. We first identify key areas of your business, such as a product, team or specific customer, and review the relevant contracts, processes and relationships.
There are no lengthy questionnaires to worry about. We carry out the audit in person, and it requires only a few hours of your time.
Services and scope
Which services are available through MaaS packages?
MaaS gives you access to a 12-member team of lawyers and tax advisers providing comprehensive support for your legal and tax projects.
Our services include:
- contracts, commercial and corporate law, and employment law
- IT projects, intellectual property and licensing, GDPR, and e-commerce
- holding structures, M&A and investment, regulation, and cybersecurity
- real estate, disputes, and criminal law matters
If a project involves an issue beyond our in-house experience, we bring in a specialist while retaining overall responsibility for coordinating the project.
How do you handle cross-border legal matters or expansion into new markets?
Through our own partner network in 40 countries, we find the right expert for your situation, whether you are expanding into Germany, facing a supplier dispute in the Czech Republic or dealing with fintech regulation in San Francisco.
We act as your in-house lawyer and coordinate the entire process, including communication with the international partner, so you can focus on your business while we handle the legal details.
What does access to a network of 130+ VC funds and investors mean?
Our network enables us to provide comprehensive fundraising support, from preparation to closing.
Specifically, this includes:
- Fundraising preparation: developing an investor pitch deck and carrying out legal due diligence.
- Active fundraising support: designing the process, recommending suitable investors, making introductions and managing initial communications.
- Negotiating investment documentation: from the term sheet through the funding round to post-transaction obligations.
What does the DPO service cover in practice?
Your subscription includes access to a Data Protection Officer (DPO) who supports GDPR compliance and handles related matters.
Specifically, this includes:
- audits and regular compliance monitoring,
- investigating and reporting security incidents,
- handling data subject requests under the GDPR,
- liaising with the Data Protection Authority.
Day-to-day collaboration and communication
How does the engagement work during a typical month?
We provide consistent, transparent project management throughout the month. We set strategic priorities every six months and hold a short status update every two weeks, lasting around 20 minutes, to review projects and day-to-day matters.
We work on projects according to the agreed priorities and handle urgent matters as they arise. Tasks are managed in a shared Microsoft tool, giving you an immediate, real-time view of project progress.
Who will I work with and contact on my project?
You will have direct contact with the lawyer handling your matters and with your Customer Success Manager. The manager coordinates day-to-day work, plans capacity, organises status meetings and ensures the legal team has all the information it needs. They are also your point of contact for billing and feedback.
How much time should we set aside for regular consultations or meetings?
We typically recommend setting aside one to two hours a month. This is enough to review project progress, address questions and keep our work together running smoothly.
How can we arrange a consultation on an urgent matter?
Send a message through the agreed channel, such as Slack or Microsoft chat, or call the agreed number. We handle urgent consultations within your package's response time, often sooner.
What is the Lawyer on Call service?
You have direct access to a lawyer to discuss urgent matters immediately. The service is available on working days from 09:00 to 18:00.
What do response times mean in practice?
The response time is the period within which we respond to your request. We either deliver the result directly or, for more complex tasks, explain the next steps and delivery timetable.
Learning, networking and ending the engagement
How often do you organise training events, and what topics do they cover?
Our events combine practical insights with valuable networking. We hold around six events a year, selecting topics based on our clients' current needs. Formats include the full-day Legal Tech Forum conference, morning Business Breakfast events and evening Home Grill or CEO-talks sessions focused on building relationships. Presentations combine the perspectives of lawyers, tax advisers, investors and entrepreneurs, with an emphasis on practical solutions and case studies.
MaaS clients receive discounted or complimentary admission. Each event also offers an opportunity to connect with entrepreneurs and C-level executives.
How do you measure the success of our work together?
We assess success in a way that gives you a clear view of the results and their contribution to your goals. During onboarding, you share your strategic priorities, and we align the legal project and KPIs with them. Every six months, we prepare a Progress Report setting out what we have achieved and how our work has supported your objectives.
How can I leave the MaaS programme?
There is no fixed-term commitment: you can end the engagement at any time without giving a reason. A two-month notice period allows us to complete projects and hand over your matters safely.
